Gunnar Flørning started carving figures from wood and buffalo horn in his early 20s (early 1950s) as a hobby.
Then he got an inquiry from the luxury homeware store Illums Bolighus in Denmark for carved cranes in horn. He quit his job to rent a workshop in Copenhagen. After a year he started making lions and other animals of ropes, the sales were so good he could hire his first 5 employees. He then came in contact with the wholesaler Laurids Lønborg, who offered to buy everything and it gradually became a large production of applied arts and gift items.
